Every founder we meet on a paid-social plateau says the same thing: “The audiences just stopped working.” Nine times out of ten, that diagnosis is wrong, and pivoting your targeting strategy when the real problem is creative fatigue burns weeks and money.
What’s actually happening on Meta and TikTok
Audience-level targeting has been progressively black-boxed since iOS 14.5. The platforms now do the lookalike inference for you, your remaining lever is the input, not the dial.
That means creative is the new targeting. How many genuinely different creative concepts your account ships per month determines whether the algorithm has enough fresh inventory to keep CPMs from compounding upward.
The 12-concept rule
In our retainer accounts, the threshold where compound performance kicks in is around 12 distinct creative concepts per month, not 12 variations of one concept, but 12 hypothesis-driven swings at different angles, hooks, and formats.
If you’re shipping three or fewer, the algorithm is starving. If you’re shipping 20, you’re generating fatigue faster than you can measure it.
How to fix it
- Pick six angles per month, two formats each.
- Use a 60/30/10 budget split, 60% to proven winners, 30% to fresh swings, 10% to wild bets.
- Kill anything below a 1.2x ROAS by day 5. Don’t nurture losers.
Teams that operationalise this stop blaming Meta and start compounding.
